Vitesco Technologies Powers Honda CR-V Plug-in Fuel Cell EV with Advanced Drive System

Vitesco Technologies, a top supplier of modern drive technologies and electrification solutions, is supplying its EMR3 integrated axle drive to Honda for the new CR-V e:FCEV. This vehicle will be available in the U.S. and Japan later this year. This marks the first time Vitesco Technologies’ drive system is used in a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

In addition to the axle drive, Honda will also use Vitesco Technologies’ fuel cell stack bypass valve to manage airflow in and out of the fuel cell. This valve benefits from Vitesco’s extensive experience in combustion engine airflow management, making it crucial for modern fuel cell systems.

Although the CR-V e:FCEV’s production numbers may not match other CR-V models, it stands out for its innovation. The vehicle combines long range and quick refueling of a fuel cell system with the option to drive up to 60 kilometers on electric power from a 17.7 kWh high-voltage battery. Additionally, the car features a 110 V electric outlet capable of supplying up to 1,500 W, turning it into a clean power source for emergencies and outdoor activities.

Thomas Stierle, a Member of Vitesco Technologies’ Executive Board, said, “We are proud to deliver our proven EMR3 axle drive system to a car that combines so many innovative elements of clean mobility. It is good to see our drive technology seamlessly fit into Honda’s pursuit of carbon neutrality.”

The EMR3 axle drive combines an electric motor, power electronics, and a reducer into one compact unit. For the Honda e:FCEV, Vitesco Technologies will deliver the version with an electric motor and power electronics, but without the reducer. The EMR3 is popular for its compact size, low weight, high efficiency, and easy vehicle integration. By March 2024, over 900,000 EMR3 units had been delivered to various brands and models worldwide.

The EMR3 system for the CR-V e:FCEV was developed by experts from Europe, China, and Japan. In the Honda SUV, it delivers 174 horsepower and 229 lb.-ft. peak torque, with a full hydrogen tank providing a range of over 600 kilometers plus an additional 60 kilometers on electric power. The EMR3 is being manufactured at Vitesco Technologies’ facility in Tianjin, China.

Gunter Muehlberg, Head of Product Management High Voltage Drives at Vitesco Technologies, said, “Hydrogen fuel cell systems offer an attractive option for stress-free, long-distance sustainable mobility. Our axle drive systems work smoothly and without noteworthy changes in an electric car with a fuel cell system. This is another future proof for our successful drive technology.”
