SmartFactory-KL sets up production island _SKYE at Hannover Messe

SmartFactory-KL, will be introducing its latest venture, the production island _SKYE, at the Hannover Messe 24. Positioned in Hall 8, stand D18, the exhibit highlights the integration of reused components into the manufacturing process, signaling a paradigm shift towards sustainable production practices.

Circular economy
The _SKYE production island is a testament to the circular economy ethos, emphasizing the recycling and reintegration of used parts and components into the manufacturing value chain. This initiative not only conserves resources but also mitigates CO2 emissions, contributing significantly to cost savings.

Teresa Petzsche, Co-Developer of _SKYE for Green AI Hub Mittelstand, emphasized the significance of combining AI with industrial practices, stating, “We are applying this concept in an industrial context, which will be pivotal for the future of sustainable production.”

The _SKYE production island operates within the Kaiserslautern Shared Production landscape, leveraging AI to assess model truck parts manufactured as sample products at the Hannover Messe. Each reusable component is equipped with a Digital Product Pass (DPP), implemented as an administration shell, providing vital information such as the component’s condition, usage history, and carbon footprint. These components are stored temporarily and made available for reinstallation, thus extending their lifecycle and reducing waste. “We had a big advantage,” said Petzsche, “In having access to a realistic industrial manufacturing environment. We were able to integrate the _SKYE production island into a service-based data space that operates under realistic constraints.”

“Re-Use” Use Case at Hannover Messe
Visitors to the SmartFactory-KL stand can experience the “Re-Use” use case firsthand by configuring and ordering their model truck. The production island_SKYE participates in the data space as a supplier of reusable components, facilitated by administration shells that enable product quality checks and self-descriptions. This transparency empowers consumers to make informed decisions regarding the incorporation of used components into their products.

Petzsche further elaborated, “Anyone who configures a small truck with us can take it home. Each model features a QR code linking to its administration shell, providing detailed insights into its lifecycle.”

The unveiling of the _SKYE production island at the Hannover Messe underscores SmartFactory-KL’s commitment to advancing sustainable manufacturing practices. By bridging the gap between innovation and environmental stewardship, SmartFactory-KL continues to lead the charge toward a greener, more efficient industrial landscape.
