Tata Power Renewable Energy signs PPA with SJVN to set up 460 MW FDRE project

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with SJVN Limited (SJVN), an Indian Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), for a 460 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) Project.

The plant, designed to meet the 460 MW FDRE requirement, integrates solar, wind, and battery storage technologies to ensure efficient energy dispatch during peak hours, thereby stabilizing the grid. FDRE enables round-the-clock power supply, assisting Distribution Companies (Discoms) in fulfilling Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO) and Energy Storage Obligations (ESO).

Commenting on the partnership, Deepesh Nanda, CEO and Managing Director, TPREL, said, “This partnership with SJVN Limited will witness the deployment of best-in-class sustainable energy solutions from TPREL. It will go a long way in meeting the green energy objectives of SJVN Limited. By integrating diverse renewable energy sources and leveraging the importance of Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE), the collaboration will ensure a dependable power supply and also actively contribute to India’s ambitious renewable energy targets.”

Pawan Varma, Executive Director (REIA & RTS) at SJVN Limited, said, “Through this partnership, we aim to leverage our combined expertise to drive innovation and support the nation’s transition towards clean energy.”

The plant is anticipated to generate approximately 3,000 MUs of power while offsetting around ~2200 Mn. Kgs of CO2 emissions annually, TPREL said.

PG Technoplast opens new integrated AC manufacturing facility in Rajasthan

PG Technoplast Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PG Electroplast Limited (PGEL), announced the opening of its new air-conditioning manufacturing facility for North India in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. This strategic investment aims to meet the growing demand for energy-efficient and sustainable cooling solutions in India and expand the company’s footprint in the rapidly growing air-conditioning market.

Vishal Gupta, Managing Director (Finance), PG Electroplast Limited said, “Today marks a noteworthy milestone for PG as we inaugurate our second integrated air-conditioning manufacturing facility in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. This facility emphasizes our commitment to delivering high-quality, energy-efficient cooling solutions that cater to the evolving needs of Indian consumers. With this expanded capacity, we intend to lead innovation in the landscape of Room ACs and capture a larger portion of the North Indian AC manufacturing market.”

The brand-new facility, spanning an impressive 200,000 sq. ft. manufacturers a comprehensive range of split ACs ranging from 0.75T to 2.0T with installed annual capacities of 360k AC Indoor Units, 360k AC Outdoor Units and 250k Window ACs. Its production capabilities, including the manufacturing of AC units, cover sheet metal components, powder coating plant, heat exchangers, and copper tubing systems. This unit will create additional employment for over 1,000 people.

The facility was unveiled by Kamal Nandi (Business Head and Executive Vice President, Godrej Appliances); NS Satish (President, Haier India); and Pradeep Jain (Managing Director, Jaina India).

Huf opens its first testing and requalification center in India

Huf, the German headquartered specialist for car access and authorization solutions, recently announced the inauguration of its new testing and requalification center in India at its plant in Chakan near Pune with local customers and employees. With the opening of TCIL (Technical Center India Laboratory), Huf expands its local engineering competence after the inauguration of the Technical Center India (TCI) in the Baner in Pune last year.

The new Laboratory will support the product development activities for the Asian market by testing and validating upcoming innovations but also highly frequented products like lock sets and door handles that Huf is already supplying to global car manufacturers. The new TCIL will also take care of the annual requalification requirements emerging from other Asian and other global Huf locations.

“In 2008 Huf opened its doors in Pune and very quickly became a well-known address for excellent access and authorization products,” said Dirk Fischer, COO of Huf, at the inauguration ceremony. “Today, Huf India is one of our flagship locations for lean management and sustainability. The team in India plays an important role in our Grow beyond strategy to increase our net sales in 2031 up to 2 billion Euros.”

“We are expanding our global network of testing and validation centers to meet the ever-increasing demand for our innovative products and fulfill the high expectations of our customers,” said Bogdan Nuna, CTO of Huf. “The new TCIL is the next milestone in our global set up of development teams to deliver innovation to customers when and where it is needed at reasonable prices, while retaining the leading position when it comes to product quality. With the TCI in Pune and the new TCIL in our plant in Chakan we have now a very good set-up to accelerate our business growth not only on in this important market but also in Asia and above.”

The TCIL is located in a new prepared area of more than 350 square meters with further expansion potential of additional 200 square meters in the Huf site in Chakan. Skilled test and validation engineers will work around the clock on the latest car door handles and locking solutions for Asian but also global customers.

“The TCIL complements perfectly our strategy of high vertical integration in India,” said Sandeep Chaudhary, Vice President, Huf India. “In Chakan we have the production competencies like die casting, molding, Robotic painting and assembly, and can now directly test and validate our products to supply top quality to our customers. Combined with the product development team located in the western part of Pune we offer high competencies in engineering and production.”

Sahana Shastry receives the Young Engineer Woman Award

April 26 saw Sahana Shastry honored with the Young Engineer Woman Award at the FEMWORX Career Congress. An independent jury consisting of the members of the FEMWORX Congress Advisory Board selected her as the winner among three nominated female experts.

Dr. Kathrin Rüschenschmidt, Director Innovation Process & PMO at Emerson and member of the FEMWORX Advisory Board, presented the award in her function as a member of the jury. Every year at HANNOVER MESSE, Deutsche Messe honors a young female expert who has made a particularly notable contribution to scientific and technical disciplines. The initiative seeks to motivate companies to do even more to recognize and promote the achievements and exceptional commitment of their female employees in STEM professions.

Sahana Shastry received her Master of Science in Space Sciences and Technologies from the University of Bremen last year. Since then, she has worked as a systems engineer at DSI Aerospace, focusing on mass storage systems for on-board electronics to support the expansion of ESA’s Copernicus program. She also heads the Women in Aerospace Europe working group, in which she authored the white papers. This is where measures are being investigated and implemented to bridge the skills and gender gap in the aerospace industry. Sahana Shastry serves as an advisory member and COO for the student rocket and space group ASTRA e.V. from Bremen in her free time. She is also co-author of the chapter on EDI promoting the new spaceflight economy in the Oxford Handbook of New Space Economy.

HANNOVER MESSE 2024: “Powerhouse for promising upswing”

HANNOVER MESSE 2024 was both an industrial powerhouse and a technology trade fair for the future,” remarked Dr. Jochen Köckler, Chairman of the Managing Board, Deutsche Messe AG, at the closing press conference for HANNOVER MESSE 2024. “It was an industrial powerhouse because visitors found answers to how they can profitably take advantage of automation, artificial intelligence, hydrogen and many other high-tech solutions in their factories, thus making them fit for the future. And it has been a future-oriented technology trade fair, since the innovations that drive industrial competitiveness and sustainability were on display here.”

The more than 130,000 visitors from 150 nations traded ideas with some 4,000 exhibiting companies on ways of digitalizing their value chains and making them more resilient. “This means we achieved our ambitious visitor target in a year where HANNOVER MESSE was smaller due to the biennial rotation of several of its component events,” said Köckler. More than 40 percent of visitors came from abroad. Apart from the host nation of Germany, the top visitor nations were China, the Netherlands, South Korea, the United States and Japan.

Dr. Gunther Kegel, President of the ZVEI association and Chairman of the HANNOVER MESSE Exhibitor Advisory Board, stated, “In the current difficult economic environment, this year’s Hannover Messe is a key morale booster. Companies from the electrical and digital industry have impressively demonstrated how innovations, especially the use of artificial intelligence, are opening up new options for more climate protection and greater efficiency in energy consumption and the use of resources. But also for more optimism. We can confidently take on major social challenges such as curbing global warming if we adopt the right measures and consistently pursue the path towards electrification, digitalization and automation. Hannover Messe has once again made the innovative strength of our companies visible and thus made an important contribution to strengthening Germany as an industrial location,” he concluded.

Thilo Brodtmann, Managing Director, VDMA association, added, “Thinking far beyond day-to-day matters and developing solutions for digital and climate-neutral production – that is the goal of innovative mechanical engineering firms. At this year’s HANNOVER MESSE, they demonstrated how factories can be controlled more intelligently, how climate protection can be achieved more quickly with modern means of production and how autonomous systems can make production safer and more efficient on many levels. In addition, biology and its processes will move into production – the first steps here have already been taken. Hannover Messe remains the best place for all these innovations and for a true spirit of optimism, because manufacturers, customers, political decision-makers and the media come together here in greater numbers than anywhere else.”

From solutions such as the automation of entire production plants, the voice control of machines using AI, the efficient use of hydrogen in industry to the use of software to record and reduce the carbon footprint, HANNOVER MESSE offered a comprehensive picture of the technological opportunities for the industry of today and tomorrow. New fields such as the “biologization” of the economy and carbon management were also brought into focus. And the initiative to create sovereign data spaces for small and medium-sized industrial enterprises under the “Manufacturing X” label is also gaining momentum.

This year’s HANNOVER MESSE also offered an ideal platform for start-ups looking to break into industry with their solutions. More than 300 young companies used the trade fair to network with representatives of industry. This was supported by the trade fair’s targeted networking opportunities and master classes. According to Köckler, his company’s efforts to promote young companies bore fruit: “The exchange between start-ups, investors and industrial companies was much more intensive than in previous years, encouraging us to give this topic even more space at HANNOVER MESSE 2025,” he said.

In a particularly unique way, HANNOVER MESSE served as a mainstay for economic policy agenda-setting this year. “HANNOVER MESSE made technological progress tangible for politicians,” reported Köckler. “The potential of the technologies on show here is enormous. However, it can only unfold on condition that the overall political framework is correct.”

Competitive energy costs, the expansion of digital infrastructure, fast approval procedures, a reduction in unnecessary bureaucracy and the influx of qualified workers were at the top of the agenda for the more than 300 economic policy delegations that visited the trade fair. As Köckler stated, “Here, too, there is ground for optimism. The discussions showed that Europe has the will and the capacity to fight for and maintain its competitiveness.”

A prime example of pan-European cooperation was this year’s partner country, Norway. On Tuesday at the trade fair, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck presented the roadmap for hydrogen cooperation together with Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland. Germany and Norway are planning to work together closely to enable large-volume hydrogen imports from Norway to Germany and create the necessary hydrogen infrastructure by 2030. At HANNOVER MESSE, companies from Norway and Germany signed contracts for the transportation of hydrogen and the storage of C02, known as carbon capture and storage (CCS).

HANNOVER MESSE 2025 runs from 31 March to 4 April. Canada will be featured as the partner country.

Engineer Woman Award goes to Yvonne Groth

Dipl.-Ing. Yvonne Groth was honored with the Engineer Woman Award at the opening ceremony of the FEMWORX Career Congress. An independent jury consisting of the members of the FEMWORX Congress Advisory Board had previously nominated four female experts for this prestigious prize.

The winner was honored on April 25 at the opening of the FEMWORX Career Congress. Dr. Kathrin Rüschenschmidt, Director Innovation Process & PMO at Emerson and member of the FEMWORX Advisory Board, presented the award as a member of the jury. Every year at HANNOVER MESSE, Deutsche Messe presents the Engineer Woman Award to a female expert who has made a special contribution to scientific and technical disciplines.

In Yvonne Groth, the jury selected a worthy recipient for the award. She studied agricultural sciences and environmental protection at the University of Rostock. In 2006, she joined the IBS Group as a project engineer; in 2015, she was appointed its Managing Director. She has been Managing Director of Dornier Construction und Service GmbH since 2022. In addition to her professional activities, Yvonne Groth has volunteered her time for the advancement of women for many years.

Among other activities, she is involved in the cross-mentoring program ‘Aufstieg in Unternehmen – Mentoring für Frauen in der Wirtschaft in M-V’ aiming at career advancement and mentoring for women in companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. She is also a founder of the Welcome Center Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, a contact point not only for companies but also for women newly arriving in or returning to the Mecklenburg Lake District, with the aim of supporting recruitment, continuing employment, and retention of skilled workers. Furthermore, she arranges networking lunches for female executives in the corporate sector, and participates in a working group for academia/business collaboration.

The initiative seeks to motivate companies to do even more to recognize and promote the achievements and special commitment of their female employees in STEM professions.

Strong growth of EtherCAT: 77 mn nodes in total, including 18 mn in 2023

The strong growth of EtherCAT continues: the EtherCAT Technology Group (ETG) now counts a total of 77 million EtherCAT nodes worldwide, with 18 million added in 2023 alone. These figures are based on EtherCAT chips sold. To mark 20 years of EtherCAT, the ETG published node figures for the first time last year, which is why they are not yet included in the usual market studies.

“The number of new EtherCAT nodes added in 2023 is impressive. We had assumed that chip sales would fall drastically after the end of the semiconductor crisis, as everyone had stockpiled significantly more chips than were needed in the short term,” explains Martin Rostan, Executive Director of the EtherCAT Technology Group. “In addition, the market as a whole cooled down last year. Nevertheless, EtherCAT growth continues without interruption.”

The figure is based on the EtherCAT chips sold throughout 2023, not including chips for individual I/O terminals. For example, an I/O station with 50 EtherCAT Bus Terminals only counts as a single node. Counting chips does lead to a certain time lag, as not every chip immediately becomes an EtherCAT device. However, it is more accurate than other methods. Chips with multi-protocol capability are counted according to their EtherCAT use: these quantities are therefore only included proportionally. Anyone who thinks that the ETG figures have been generously calculated for marketing purposes is wrong: on the contrary, the counting method is comparatively cautious, but the figures are very accurate.

The EtherCAT Technology Group was reluctant to publish node numbers until last year. One reason was that the number of devices based on FPGAs can only be estimated, in contrast to chip sales. These used to account for a higher proportion of implementations. In the figures now published, FPGAs only account for 10 percent, so that a certain amount of blurring here has no significant impact on the overall figure.

The EtherCAT Technology Group’s membership figures also continue to grow. “With over 7600 member companies from 74 countries, the ETG remains the world’s largest fieldbus user organization,” the company said. It adds, “Despite the current challenging economic conditions, membership growth has even accelerated in the past 12 months, with the ETG reporting over 500 new members in 2023.”

Frank Welzel, HARTING Electronics, has been re-elected as Chairman of the Board. The following four board members representing the founding members of the SPE Industrial Partner Network have been appointed to the Board: Claus Kleedoerfer, TE Connectivity (Vice Chair), Wolfgang Schenk, Belden / Hirschmann Automation & Control (Treasurer), and Jochen Metz, Metz Connect (Secretary of the Board).

The members of the both, the Board as well as the Extended Board, jointly define the strategic approach of the SPE Industrial Partner Network in order to further drive the implementation of the Single Pair Ethernet technology in the market – this to advance the Industrial Ethernet of Things (IIoT). These projects are located across various cities, including Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh), Satna (Madhya Pradesh), Balasore (Odisha), Navsari (Gujarat), Yavatmal (Maharashtra), Vijayawada, and Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh), and others.

“Gruner secured 11 projects from India’s leading business conglomerate valued Rs 1,100 crore, and 19 other projects, worth Rs 400 crore from individual business leaders,” the company said in a statement.

Utkarsh Gupta, Founder & CEO, Gruner Renewable Energy, emphasized the company’s commitment to combating climate change and driving economic growth through sustainable solutions, stating, “Currently, India satisfies about 85% of its crude oil demands through imports. However, there is a gradual effort underway to expand biofuel production capacity within the country. By leveraging our current orders in hand, we aim to reduce India’s overall expenditure on crude oil imports by INR 8 billion. Furthermore, our efforts aim to benefit farmers and generate employment in the energy industry, fostering awareness and development. We aspire to play a pivotal role in India’s commitment to becoming a net-zero economy by 2070 through renewable energy”.

The company, which started its operations last year in February 2023, currently oversees a portfolio of 30 ongoing projects, nationwide. The company aims to augment its project count to 100, aiming new order value to Rs. 5,000 crore by the end of the current financial year.

Gruner also plans to add around 900 professionals and skilled labour taking its workforce to a total of 2,500 employees including site workers by next quarter.

SFC Energy AG is showcasing its powerful hydrogen fuel cell solution at the ongoing HANNOVER MESSE 2024.

SFC Energy claims that the pilot series EFOY H2PowerPack is the company’s most powerful fuel cell solution to date. It said, “The EFOY H2PowerPack (EFOY Hydrogen Power Pack) provides users with a continuous electrical output of 50 kW for their applications. The EFOY H2PowerPack X50 is a reliable, low-maintenance, emission-free and therefore sustainable alternative to environmentally and climate-damaging power generators such as diesel generators.”

Björn Ledergerber, Senior Vice President Hydrogen & Corporate Development at SFC Energy AG said, “The EFOY H2PowerPack X50 incorporates many years of expertise in the development and use of fuel cell technology. Following the series launch of the H2Genset(2) at the beginning of April, SFC is presenting the next product innovation with a range from 50 kW to a maximum of 200 kW.”

The emission-free energy solution is equipped with standard 400 V AC connections, an integrated lithium battery, a 300-bar hydrogen interface and a user-friendly control panel. Thanks to plug-and-play interfaces, the new energy solution is ready for instant use by customers and easy to operate. To meet even higher power requirements, up to four EFOY H2PowerPacks can be connected and enable an output of up to 200 kW in cluster configuration.

Target applications therefore include emergency power supplies, e.g. for IT backup and in hospitals, as well as mobile power supplies for construction sites and events, and continuous power supplies for self-sufficient companies, for example. SFC Energy is responding to correspondingly high market demand with its push into higher power classes. The transition to series production and the official market introduction are planned for the beginning of 2025, with first pilot installations in the current year.

For installations exceeding 3 KW up to 10 KW, TPSSL and Indian Bank present a tailored financing solution that accommodates the diverse needs of homeowners. Eligible applicants can access loans up to Rs. 6 Lakh, with a margin money requirement of 20%. Interest rates ranging from 8.4% to 10.8% per annum ensure competitive financing options.

After years of strong growth, 2023 was a year of consolidation. Turnover was just below the previous year’s level (- 4.3% to around 3.65 billion euros). Festo continued to invest heavily in research and development and the expansion of regional market supply. The company sees good opportunities for growth again in the medium term. The automation of future markets, but also the qualification of the specialists required for this, offers Festo great potential for sustainable growth in the Automation and Didactic business. This includes segments such as battery and electric vehicles, green hydrogen and the semicon industry.

Business year 2023
The Festo Group recorded an economically solid year in 2023 with a satisfactory result. Sales fell slightly to 3.65 billion euros compared to the previous year (3.81 billion euros).

Uncertainty in the global economy put the brakes on higher investments by customers in mechanical and plant engineering in almost all sectors and regions, particularly in Asia and North America. The electronics industry, a strong growth driver for the global economy and also for Festo, also stuttered temporarily after a long boom phase in 2023. The digital business and the technical education sector with the Didactic division developed positively.

Festo invested 7.7% of its turnover in research and development last year. The number of employees at the end of 2023 was around 20,600 (previous year: 20,800) – of which 8,400 were employed in Germany and around 12,200 abroad.

Resilient supply chains: Local for local strategy
The realignment of the global footprint “Local for local” is the response of Festo to new global conditions. Festo is focusing on increasing the localization of its production and customer-specific development close to the markets to ensure optimal supply to customers with short delivery times and high product availability. This also involves shortening transport routes and value chains, making them more resilient and minimizing emissions.

A new plant in India close to the main Indian site in Bangalore will create the conditions for further local growth in the Indian market over the next few years and help to secure the supply chain and supply for the entire Asian market.

With the new production site in Manisa, Turkey, Festo is further expanding its regional supply for the European markets. A new logistics building for the Global Production Center Rohrbach in Saarland is being built in Germany. “We are continuing to invest in our competitiveness, new technologies and automation concepts also at our high-tech locations in Germany, particularly for the production of new products.
