EESL completes 12 years of shaping India’s energy efficiency journey

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) completes its 12 years of scaling up energy efficiency programmes in India and around the world. Founded in 2009, as a joint venture of PSUs under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, EESL is unlocking the potential of energy efficiency through their solution-driven innovative technologies. EESL’s initiatives, across sectors such as lighting, transportation, renewable energy and power distribution, have enabled considerable energy and monetary savings, along with reducing India’s GHG emissions.  Over the years, EESL has witnessed an exponential growth in spearheading implementation of various large scale energy efficiency programmes in the country, which have had a tremendous social, economic, and environmental impact.

EESL is also looking to amplify innovation in LED Bulbs and amplify adoption of Electric Cooking as per Ministry of Power’s Go-Electric campaign. All appliances and energy efficient products of EESL portfolio will be available via E-market i.e., EESLmart.in.

On the occasion, Additional Secretary, Vivek Kumar Dewangan, Power, New and Renewable Energy, said, “I would like to congratulate EESL for the outstanding achievements in the past 12 years. In the past decade, the reach of EESL has been tremendous. It is consistently being acknowledged by our stakeholders and respective state governments across India. EESL has now become a brand name, thanks to the widespread impact of affordable LED bulbs distributed under UJALA, and the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP). They have made significant efforts and must continue to do so. EESL will play a significant role in achieving the national goals committed by the Hon’ble Prime Minister at COP26 in Glasgow. There are going to be challenges but we shall overcome them. Hum Honge Kaamyab! All the best!”

Sharing his thoughts, K. Sreekant, Chairman, EESL, said, “It is a matter of pride that in 12 years, EESL has been able to achieve so much. It has made a commendable impact in the energy efficiency space. The kind of geographic spread that EESL has covered is noteworthy. We firmly believe that there’s a great deal of value that lies in energy efficiency – it is one of the key pillars for driving India’s path to Net Zero 2070. Going forward, EESL needs to focus on its strengths- which is bulk procurement and scale of operations. It needs to move ahead strategically to achieve a widespread impact. We have full faith that EESL will have a significant role to play in achieving the nation’s climate goals in the years to come.”

Celebrating the foundation day, Arun Kumar Mishra, CEO, EESL said, “The 12th Raising Day is an opportunity for us to recollect and cherish the memories of the past decade. I take pride in saying that EESLians have given their precious time and effort to take the organization to new heights by enabling access to energy efficiency in every corner of the country. The decade that lies ahead of is going to be a decade of energy transformation. And, the most trusted pathways and low hanging fruits are in the sector of energy efficiency. Going forward, we need to promote, nurture and share our future with other ESCOs. We have the goal of reducing our energy intensity by 45%. This can be achieved by collaborative efforts and flexibility in approach. I look forward to creating a better future for all of us.”

In the past years, EESL has been able to make significant contributions in the fields of LED lighting, wherein almost 9 crore households have been provided with 36 crore LED lights, while over 1 crore smart streetlights have been installed in more than 1500 Urban Local Bodies, along with 10,000 government buildings being upgraded to become more energy efficient.  EESL programmes have been able to reduce the annual energy consumption by 57 billion units and have helped the country avoid peak demand of 11,200 MW. These programmes have reduced India’s CO2 emission by 45.5 million tonnes annually, which showcases EESL’s commitment towards achieving the country’s NDC goals.

EESL’s programmes are also bringing about a socio-economic change in people’s lives and have helped the country in generating direct and indirect employment for over 50,000 people, along with being a strong promotor of Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

EESL aims to leverage its implementation experience and explore new opportunities in overseas market for diversification of its portfolio and has been recognised globally for its innovative business model and best practices for Energy Efficiency projects. The World Bank and International Energy Agency (IEA) have acknowledged EESL’s innovative business model and initiatives towards energy efficiency.

In the past few years, EESL has been extensively engaged with various stakeholders and partners like Government agencies, manufacturers, innovators, multilateral agencies, academia, R&D organisations, service agencies etc. to promote energy efficiency in various sectors of national economy.

EESL is the world’s largest energy service company (ESCO) that is driving numerous initiatives that are potential game-changers in building a conducive ecosystem for energy efficient technologies, across geographies with its unique business model of Pay-As-You-Save (PAYS), which obviates the need for any upfront capital investment by the consumer. EESL aims to lead the market transformation initiatives of the Government of India under the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) as well as to create and sustain markets for energy efficiency.
