ABB powers smart, energy-efficient systems at Noida International Airport
ABB has implemented an advanced power distribution and water management automation solution at India’s newest international airport. Noida International Airport (NIA) in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, aims to improve regional connectivity and ease congestion in nearby Delhi from April.
Designed to support 12 million annual passenger journeys in its initial phase, the airport needs a reliable, energy efficient and future-proofed power distribution and water management solution to support terminal operations, airfield services, passenger movements, water systems, baggage handling, ventilation and safety infrastructure.
NIA will begin operations from a single runway this April, with international flights scheduled to begin in the following months. Eventually NIA plans to expand to support upto 70 million passengers annually.
“To handle millions of passengers every year, Noida International Airport needed an intelligent, robust and reliable power infrastructure and an advanced water and wastewater management system. ABB’s solution is scalable to support Noida’s future growth plans and is a showcase for efficient power and water management for airports across India and beyond,” said Kiran Dutt, President, Electrification, ABB India. “By supporting major infrastructure projects like this, ABB is making a significant contribution to India’s nation-building journey. This aligns with India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 aspirations, focused on sustainable growth, stronger infrastructure and enhanced global competitiveness.”
Airports operate on a complex network to maintain seamless functioning across terminal operations, airfield services, passenger movement, water systems, baggage handling, ventilation and safety infrastructure. ABB Electrification’s advanced technologies will enable reliable energy efficient and future ready power distribution which will help critical airport functions operate seamlessly and minimize downtime risks. It starts with ABB’s 33kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) ZX2 which will enable safe and reliable power distribution from the airport’s main receiving substation. ABB’s low voltage panel and distribution boards will enhance safety and continuity of electrical 415V supply further, minimizing any risk of downtime in critical functions like main & emergency power distribution system, ventilation & smoke exhaust system, lighting & energy management system, vertical & horizontal transportation system, and other application areas. ABB’s AC500 PLC- and SCADA-based automation technologies will support the airport’s state-of-the-art water and wastewater treatment plants by enabling remote monitoring, early leak detection, consistent quality control and real-time water management. The solutions will help the airport reduce its use of local freshwater resources, recycle water and provide clean drinking water.
